Digital photographs, intraoral scans, radiographs, and cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can support diagnosis and treatment planning when clinically indicated. Each tool answers different questions and has limitations; technology does not replace a clinical examination.
Digital planning can help a clinician communicate treatment options, assess tooth position, design restorations, or evaluate root canal anatomy. The information is used alongside symptoms, examination findings, medical history, and patient preferences.
Radiation-based imaging should be prescribed only when the expected diagnostic benefit justifies exposure. Tell the dental team if you are pregnant or could be pregnant before imaging.

The appropriate technology depends on the question being investigated. More imaging is not automatically better care.
Ask what an investigation is intended to show and how the result will affect treatment decisions.
