Dental Care for Children and Adolescents

General oral health information

Children benefit from help with brushing, a diet that limits frequent exposure to sugary foods and drinks, and dental visits planned according to risk and development. A clinician may monitor primary teeth, emerging permanent teeth, tooth decay, enamel defects, oral habits, and jaw growth.

Preventive options can include fluoride toothpaste, professional fluoride application, fissure sealants, dietary advice, and instruction for parents or guardians. Treatment is recommended when examination findings indicate a need.

Dental trauma, toothache, swelling, or a tooth that changes color should be assessed. Orthodontic timing is individual and depends on the developing dentition and the nature of the concern.

Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste for children under three and a pea-sized amount for children aged three to six, unless a dental professional advises otherwise. Supervise brushing until the child can brush effectively.

The dental team should explain procedures in an age-appropriate way and discuss behavior support options with the parent or guardian.
